EMAS - The Environmental Work in Uddevalla

In 2004 Uddevalla municipality became Sweden´s, first EMAS registered municipality. The EU´s decision to make EMAS registration possible for municipalities was a first milestone. A second milestone occurred in 2004 when the council obtained the certificate of registration. A third milestone was the EU´s nomination of Uddevalla for a prize as “a big EMAS registered organization", in 2005.

Uddevalla´s city council decided in 1999 to work towards getting all of the municipality´s operations registered according to EMAS (Eco Management and Audit Scheme). The purpose of getting registered by EMAS was to give credibility to the municipality´s environmental work, quality assurance, open declaration and independent scrutiny. We have worked for 5 years within the whole municipality organisation with the goal that all operations would be registered by EMAS.

The municipality of Uddevalla was registered by EMAS in December 2004. We are the first municipality in Sweden to do so.

We have worked for many years with environmental issues in Uddevalla. An example of our work with environmental issues is our publication "Biological diversity - a nature guide". It has been produced yearly since 2003 in a process with 12 different cultural and educational associations. Yet another example is our policy that all newly acquired cars in the municipality operations are driven by ethanol. The ethanol we use is produced from Swedish trees. In October 2005 we also got our first biogas pump with methane produced locally from recycled biodegradable products. This enables the use of biogas vehicles as well.

Our work continues now with education classes for our 5 000 employees and continual, continued development of contacts with local organisations, businesses and our citizens.

Annual internal and external audits are all done according to the EMAS standard.

Information about the environmental work done in Uddevalla is published annually in our Environmental declaration. It is available both in print as well as on our website.
